• Survivors of Assault and the after effects

People who have been molested, assaulted, abused or raped are usually emotionally scarred. They feel towards certain people the way you would feel if you were involved in a terrible car accident at a particular intersection. You would be very careful when driving near that intersection after that and would probably try to avoid it all together because you’d shy away from the memory of all that pain. We all have a mechanism for avoiding pain that plays itself out in different ways; the more severe the source of the pain, generally the more severe the reaction.

When we discuss these people who have experienced something tragic like sexual assault, the signs are very important to read. Depending on the person’s value system, the age that it happened and the specific situation that took place, it will be acted out differently. However, the survivor will ALWAYS act it out. Their bodies are in pain, fear and anger, all of which it can express themselves in different ways.

A girl I went to high school with was considered if not the prettiest, then certainly one of the prettiest in school. All the boys wanted to be with her and from the outside she looked like she probably had the greatest life ever! She confessed the truth to me years later when she told how the other girls had hated her and due to jealousy, tortured her emotionally and sometimes physically. She went on to tell me that her parents had a strict curfew so she wasn’t able to go out at night like most high school kids do and the boys all just wanted to sleep with her, which made her paranoid about men. The after effects of this shocking situation have developed her into a person that can go from 0 -100 on the temper scale with only a one word trigger! She can get irate if you question her about just about any topic or if she feels pressured in any way. This is all due to the fact she has suppressed all the hostility from her past and it comes out as a girl with a huge temper. It really doesn’t matter if the original incident happened in high school, at home or in a relationship, anyone with a hair trigger temper is really lashing out at a specific incident and anything or anyone that can remind them of the past. We usually pass it off as someone who is difficult to work with or whisper ‘Bitch’ under our breaths, but really this is a person in pain who is trying their best to run away from it.

You have to imagine what the person has gone through and then pick your words to avoid confrontation. For example, there is a person I know who courageously survived cancer twice. She is a model, so on top of having her hair fall out during treatment, she was not able to work. One day I said to her, “Life is too short and we should live it up.
